Guilt-Free Luxury

Curtain Bluff, Antigua
Twenty-five years ago, this luxury oceanfront Caribbean resort established a fund supported by management and guests to improve education and health care in the community. Over the past decade, Curtain Bluff's fund has sent more than 15 students to college on scholarships and dozens of children to tennis camp in the United States. It also pays for medical care for needy residents, including an operation to correct a child's clubfoot (268-462-8400; curtainbluff.com; doubles, $595–$950).

Hotel Punta Islita, Costa Rica
This 45-room hotel offers unparalleled views from its mountaintop perch above the Pacific. Several rooms have their own plunge pools, and all come with brochures explaining the hotel's We Care program. More than $120,000 a year—approximately three percent of Punta Islita's annual gross—goes toward community-improvement projects. To date, donations have paid for a new generator, a waste management system, and a health clinic (506-290-4259; hotelpuntaislita.com; doubles, $180–$240).

Jetwing Hotels
After losing 42 guests and nine staff members in the 2004 tsunami, Sri Lanka's 13 Jetwing Hotels established a relief fund to aid in the reconstruction of homes and villages destroyed in the disaster. But the company has long contributed to the communities in which it operates, building homes and donating boats to locals to support the fishing industry (94-11-5545711; jetwing.net).

Kasbah Du Toubkal, Morocco
A restored castle at the foot of North Africa's highest peak, this Berber inn delivers magnificent views from nearly every window and even better ones from its rooftop terrace. Guests are required to pay an additional five percent surcharge, which goes into a fund to help finance public works projects in the surrounding villages. To date, the money raised has paid for new water treatment and rubbish disposal systems, as well as public washing and toilet facilities (33-0-5-45-71-52-04; kasbahdutoubkal.com; doubles, $170–$255).

Lapa Rios Ecolodge, Costa Rica
With its 16 elegant and enormous bungalows overlooking the Pacific, Lapa Rios is consistently rated one of the best lodges in Central America. It's also one of the more socially responsible: In addition to buying local produce and selling only locally made crafts in the gift shop, the owners, former Peace Corps volunteers, built a primary school in one of the least developed areas of the country. The government now runs the school, but hotel guests are encouraged to donate books and sports equipment (506-735-5130; laparios.com; doubles, $390–$484).
