The Rise of the Exclusive All-Inclusive
Seven Scenarios
There's an all-inclusive to suit everyone—almost
You're a grandparent taking your clan on a sunny vacation: Book it! All-inclusives allow every generation within a family to do their own thing during the day and then gather for an evening meal and some quality togetherness—without worrying about morning expenses.
You're a foodie: Choose carefully. Few all-inclusives focus on the quality of their cuisine. If food matters, look for a property that's landed a proven chef (Sergei Arola at the Royal Hideaway Playacar, for example) or opt to stay at one of the independent—and exorbitantly expensive—ultraluxury properties (like The Point).
You're a hard-drinking couch potato: Party on! All-inclusive resorts have multiple bars that open early and close late, and no one has to worry about driving anywhere. All the big players now offer premium liquor (think Grey Goose) and even thrown champagne into the deal.
You're vacationing with kids: Worry not. All-inclusives that cater to families are designed with the enjoyment of parents and kids in mind: The properties are enclosed, the price is fixed, the activities are myriad, the food runs from pizza to pappardelle, and Mom can build sandcastles on the beach with little Greg while Dad teaches Marcia how to swim in the build.
You're an active type: Pack the sunscreen and the sneakers. From beach volleyball and tennis matches to kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, and scuba diving, you'll find plenty to do.
You're planning a trip for a group of friends: Look no further. Pick an all-inclusive for adults (but not couples-only). These specialize in crowd-pleasers such as sailing trips, surfing schools, and even evening merengue lessons.
You're a spa junkie: Prepare to spend extra. The majority of all-inclusive resorts now have spas, and some are especially good, but, the treatments usually cost extra.
