The Rise of the Exclusive All-Inclusive
Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort, Fiji
On Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, the resort comprises 25 bungalows, ranging from basic to luxe, scattered around the 17-acre property. The focus here is on the environment: Guests may help plant mangrove seedlings, hike through the rain forest, or tour the coral reef in a glass-bottom boat with a marine biologist. These excursions, and activities such as sailing, paddling, and yoga, are included in the resort's rate; snorkeling and diving are extra (800-246-3454; fijiresort.com; doubles, $575–$990, with a three-night minimum).
Nimmo Bay, British Columbia
Nimmo Bay's helicopters and guides take guests on their choice of adventures by day—heli-fishing or -hiking, spelunking, whale watching, river rafting, or ocean kayaking—and return them to the resort each evening for gourmet dinners prepared using local ingredients. All gear is provided, from fishing equipment to hiking boots (250-856-4000; nimmobay.com; from $5,410 per person for three nights).
North Island, Seychelles
On its own private island in the Indian Ocean, the resort has 11 immense two-bedroom villas, each with a pool. Guests receive a massage upon arrival, and can go diving, snorkeling, or kayaking at no additional cost. The personal service extends to the "no menu" dining—the chef develops meals around each guest's preferences (248-293-100; north-island.com; doubles, $3,490–$6,351).
The Point, New York
This property on Saranac Lake, with 11 antiques-furnished guest rooms, was originally a Rockefeller summer home, and it retains much of its rustic grandeur. Rates include such genteel pastimes as sailing, croquet, and a round of golf, and guests are expected to dress for dinner. Afternoon tea, unlimited wine and spirits, and fishing rods and mountain bikes are also included (518-891-5674; thepointresort.com; doubles, $1,250–$2,100).
Reserva Amazonica, Peru
Deep in virgin Amazon rain forest, Reserva Amazonica specializes in wildlife excursions on foot and by boat. A brand-new canopy walk allows visitors to stroll 150 feet above the forest floor, along hanging bridges that connect treetop platforms. The 34 thatched cabanas have hot water showers and toiletries. Spa services are extra, but all other activities are included in the rate (800-442-5042; inkaterra.com/reserva_amazonica; doubles, $490–$690, with a two-night minimum).
Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Jamaica
This sumptuous retreat overlooking Montego Bay offers both à la carte rates and a "Platinum Plan" that covers not just food and drinks but also water activities, a half-hour massage, horseback riding, river rafting, and meals at four area restaurants (876-956-7050; roundhilljamaica.com; doubles, $350–$1,180; Platinum Plan, $170 per person surcharge per night).
