Brush aside the mosquito netting, roll out of bed, and step onto the terrace, and you'll receive a boisterous greeting from a brown jacamar, an egret, or another of the 500-odd bird species residing in this pocket of the biodiverse Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border. Perched on stilts above the Capahuari River, Ecuador's remote Kapawi Ecolodge—two planes and a boat ride from Quito—isn't just environmentally conscious, it's downright reverent. Solar panels power the lodge, and the 19 thatched-roof cabanas are built of palm and mahogany without a single nail, following the methods of the indigenous Achuar.
