Concierge.com's Insider Guide:
Room 1933, Omni San Diego Hotel, San Diego, California; 619-231-6664; www.omnihotels.com. There are 511 rooms; doubles range from $329 to $750. Room 1933 is $349.
Now, going back to your room to catch the game's progress is a real-time thrill. The Omni opened its doors in early April to coincide with the first pitch at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres' sparkling $294 million baseball stadium and the newest jewel in the city's revitalized downtown. As if hosting heavy hitters Barry Bonds, Dave Winfield, and Steve Garvey weren't evidence enough, the hotel displays its commitment to baseball greatness inside: Joe DiMaggio's cleats are in the lobby, Babe Ruth's 1932 contract with the Yankees is in the Presidential Suite, and a broken bat autographed by Willie Mays in 1962 is in the fifth-floor hallway. Your own room comes stocked with peanuts and Cracker Jack (in the minibar). And should you want to get closer to the action on the field, a skybridge links the 32-story hotel to the park.
