Trip Tech: Far and Away
SOS to the World
Send for help when you're off the grid
SPOT
A tracking beacon with GPS, Spot has three function keys: 911 launches search-and-rescue operations; HELP alerts authorities that you need assistance but are not in immediate danger; and OK sends your exact location to e-mail addresses you designate before departure.
Where it works: In North America, Europe, Australia, and parts of South America, North Africa, and northeast Asia.
Cost: $169, plus $100 a year (findmespot.com).
MICROFIX
Microfix is among the newest, smallest personal locator beacons. When triggered, it broadcasts a distress signal, initiating search-and-rescue. Satellites triangulate its location, and it can transmit for 20 to 40 hours, even in harsh conditions.
Where it works: Everywhere—Microfix relies on the same satellite system used by marine and aircraft distress beacons.
Cost: $740; rentals, $59 to $69 per week (acrelectronics.com).
