Spa Plus: The Socialite

New York finally got the spas it deserves—and, in the city that never sleeps, each comes with a place to party after the pamper. Raise a glass!

Plaza Hotel
Detox
An entitled assortment, from Betsey Johnson to Carla Bruni, hit the new Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa at the Central Park landmark for a barrel bath in a wood-paneled cabin, using circulation-boosting red vine extracts or exfoliating grape marc

Retox
Big names like Duke Ellington and Miles Davis played the Plaza's Rose Club back in the day; now, the red-manicured prop their Louboutins on gilded tables and order rounds of $25 cocktails (the Park Side Smash is a local fave), served up with genteel flair by waiters in bow ties and shiny brogues.

The Carlye
Detox
A taste of glitzy Art Deco-style glam tiled in platinum mosaic, the Carlyle's Sense, a Rosewood Spa, lures the likes of Salma Hayek and Kate Bosworth with generous slathers of Sisley Sisleÿa Radiance Anti-Aging Concentrate (which goes for $500 an ounce) during the Le Soin Sisleÿa Anti-Age facial.

Retox
If it's good enough for Woody Allen, it's good enough for us. The director-turned-clarinetist has played Café Carlyle most Mondays for years (for dates, check thecarlyle.com/entertainment.cfm). The Sex and the City girls prefer Bemelmans bar there, where they after-after-partied their 2008 movie release.
(35 East 76th Street; 212-744-1600)

Greenwich Hotel
Detox
Ginger tea, lemongrass scents, and treatments using ground walnut, kelp, and lotus to scrub and soothe create Shibui's Zen vibe. The design's impressive, too, with a lantern-lit pool and a 250-year-old Japanese bamboo farmhouse that took two years to piece back together.

Retox
Greenwich owner Robert De Niro is known to hobknob at his hotel bar, which has a loungy library vibe warmed by leather sofas, battered wooden beams, and a members club feel. Peckish? Andrew Carmellini has taken the reins of the doomed Ago resto, which is now called Locanda Verde.
(377 Greenwich Street; 212-941-8900)

Waldorf-Astoria
Detox
Gleaming white marble walls and glittery crystal lights give the Waldorf's Guerlain Spa an ethereal vibe, but down-to-earth massages deliver deep, intense kneads, and custom Orchidée Impériale facials (a fave of Hilary Swank's) get impressive detoxifying results. A no-tipping policy alleviates daunting mental math.

Retox
Old-moneyed and old-fashioned, Sir Harry's hosts tuxedoed post-symphony revelers who mix with martini-sipping grandes dames and a sprinkle of notable names—Angelina Jolie, for one, has nipped into the bar for a bevvy. (301 Park Avenue; 212-355-3000)

Mandarin Oriental
Detox
On the hotel's thirty-fifth floor, the Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, a five-year-old stalwart that had a virtual monopoly until last year, is super serene: teak shutters, candles, and a cavernous tub in the Thai yoga suite; cushy loungers overlooking the Hudson River.

Retox
Steps from the spa, the Lobby Lounge banks on cityscape views—which it supplements with decadent Jacques Torres hot chocolate, afternoon tea, and a menu of specialty drinks. It's a tad touristy, but celebs love the hotel: You might share an elevator with Keanu, Gwyn, or Mary Kate.
(80 Columbus Circle; 212-805-8800)

The Peninsula
Detox
ESPA's new Manhattan flagship is both warm and avant: A cedar sauna tempers the glass-encased pool, and a 24-karat mosaic shines onto a marble ice fountain. Nestle under a fluffy duvet in a relaxation room bed, and plug in your iPod to drown out the city din.

Retox
Summer's the time to drink fresh mangoes, coconuts, and lychees squeezed into strong cocktails at the rooftop Salon de Ning, stylish since its buzzy May 2008 opening with stripy pillows, spindly manicured trees, and a smattering of comfy latticed seats paired with bright Chinese stools.
(700 Fifth Avenue; 212-247-2200)
