Spa Plus: The Credit-Crunched

If you yearn for spa nirvana but, in these economically challenging times, are short on funds, don't fear. We've scoured Asia for ten sublime spas with treatments for less than $100

Angsana City Club & Spa Crescat City
Colombo, Sri Lanka
Banyan Tree brings Swedish, Indonesian, and Thai treatments to this vibrant city far from the strife affecting the north and east of the country. Jewel tones decorate the 11 plush treatment rooms; we recommend the two-hour Angsana Massage, blending smooth Balinese strokes with an intensive, tension- releasing massage of the hands (94-11-242-4245; angsanaspa.com; massages, $35-$70).

Anggun Spa
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Muslim call to prayer regularly infiltrates this no-frills spa in the Hotel Maya, melodiously enhancing the traditional Malay Urut long-stroke massage adapted from village traditions to incorporate deep thumb pressure into sites along Chinese medicine meridian points. Other attractions include an open-air hydrotherapy pool and a luscious fresh juice bar (603-2711-8866; hotelmaya.com.my; massages, $61-$92).

Aleenta Spa
Phang Nga, Thailand
Lily ponds attract kaleidoscopic butterflies at this four-room retreat. Spring for the Thai Herbal Hot Compress, an updated spin on local healing traditions in which steamed indigenous herbs wrapped in organic yam cotton are rolled gently along the skin to alleviate muscle aches and make jet lag fly away (66-2-514-8112; aleenta.com; massages, $34-$71).

Jari Menari
Seminyak, Bali
Male therapists perform massages at this low-key space near Seminyak Beach. The deep kneads are among the island's best thanks to the spa's unique combination of the long strokes of Esalen, Thai stretching, and Indonesian and Swedish massage, enhanced with Breema shiatsu breathing techniques. Add some acoustics with the Singing Bowl Massage (62-361-736-740; jarimenari.com; massages, $24-$38).

Living Room
Shanghai, China
Bypass the full bar inside this 70-year-old colonial building in Shanghai's French Concession, where the stylish quaff martinis over manicures, and head straight to the spa for the 90-minute signature massage, in which lavish amounts of intoxicating oils are used to lubricate full-body strokes (86-21-5404-6007; livingroom.com.cn; massages, $37-$99).

Menla Spa
Paro, Bhutan
The location of this stone-clad spa at the Zhiwa Ling Hotel, across from the sheer rocky cliffs surrounding Tiger's Nest Temple, is said to give those who pass through it good fortune. While you wait for your windfall, enjoy the relaxing vibrations from Himalayan singing bowls, then sink into a traditional Bhutanese herb-infused medicinal bath to relieve sore muscles after mountain treks (975-8-271277; zhiwaling.com; massages, $25-$90).

Fish Reflexology
Singapore
Not for the squeamish, the Spa Fish Pool Dip treatment puts Turkish Garra rufa or the more aggressive East African Oreochromis mossambica fish to work, nibbling dead skin off the soles of the feet. After 20 minutes of exotic exfoliation, settle into a padded leather recliner for more traditional Chinese foot reflexology (65-6279-9229; underwaterworld.com.sg; massages, $25-$35).
