"Ugly as sin, poorly clad, and oppressively suspended," was one Toronto Star reporters take on the Michael Lee-Chin Crystalarchitect Daniel Libeskind's spiky extension to the Royal Ontario Museumwhen it opened two years ago. The arresting sequence of brushed-aluminum and glass prisms is certainly an anomaly in Yorkville, a neighborhood saturated with Victorian and Edwardian facades. And yet, despite the dissent, the addition has its share of admirers, not least this magazine, which chose it as one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World" (April 2008). Your room stands in stark contrast to the contentious landmark outside. Decorated in soft beige and white, it cultivates tranquility as artfully as the Crystal stirs passion. The ten-year-old Park Hyatt, housed in a 1933 building, is a relative veteran among the condo, hotel, and office towers of Toronto's rapidly expanding skyline. For a better look at the shifting cityscape, head up to the hotel's Roof Lounge, which offers panoramic views. Here, one thing is clear: Whether you protest or applaud the Crystal, its impact is undeniable. If You Liked This Article...
