10 Perfect Days in Big Sky Country: Montana and Wyoming

There are some places you can't help but fall in love with at first sight and return to year after year. We've chosen some of the world's most beloved (and touristed) destinations and, with the help of the best travel specialists in the business, have ferreted out their secrets, their treasures, their unmissable experiences. The result is a series of step-by-step trips that will surprise and delight those who've never been to the destination before . . . or who have been a dozen times. Each of our highly detailed itineraries has been vetted and perfected by a Condé Nast Traveler editor, and each can be bought as is with just one phone call. Let the romance begin

The Challenge

Big Sky county, which includes Montana and Wyoming and three of America's most stunning national parks—Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton—is where our pioneer dreams are born. The first tourist to Yellowstone was probably Warren Angus Ferris, who visited in 1834 after hearing fur trappers' reports of candy-colored cliffs and craters that spouted boiling water. Today, a plethora of blazing spirit. nowhere else on earth can you find this combination of ancient glaciers, hundred-foot geysers, sawtooth mountain ranges, and pristine alpine lakes. Although these states are sparsely populated, the national parks within their boundaries make for well-trodden vacation destinations, particularly with families traveling by RV. Yellowstone, the most popular of the country's national parks, has reported record visitor numbers in recent months; Glacier National Park sees about two million travelers a year, Grand Teton two and a half million. And so the problem facing adventure lovers is one of privacy: how to enjoy the land without the company of the hotels-on-wheels set. Add to the mix an unruly climate (Yellowstone sees only about 40 frost-free days each year, Glacier even fewer) and the vast amount of ground to cover (together, the three parks constitute more than 3.5 million acres) and you've got some real issues to work out. How does one fit the greatest hits of such an expanse into a single trip?

The Solution

We did the legwork for you to come up with a ten-day itinerary that includes time in all three parks, at a working dude ranch, and in the chic mountain town of Jackson, Wyoming (while remaining far from the madding crowd). The best way to truly appreciate Yellowstone and its sister parks is to get off the roads and into the backcountry—also a great way to avoid other travelers. In Yellowstone, fewer than three percent of those three million visitors venture more than a quarter mile from their cars. Finding the best spots off the beaten path requires expert advice, however, so we turned to Caroline Bach Wood of Brownell Travel in Bozeman, Montana. Don't be deceived by her Southern accent; Wood spent every childhood summer in Yellowstone and now lives 90 miles from the park. Together, we constructed the itinerary that follows. Sure, you could book it yourself, but if you'd rather not deal with the details or you want to customize it, give Wood a call. She'll tell you that fall is your best bet: The parks are much quieter once school is back in session, and the weather is thrillingly changeable—you might encounter 80-degree temperatures or snow squalls. Because Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road is snow-covered for much of the year but the dude ranch we recommend is restricted to weeklong stays for the majority of the summer, this itinerary is possible only from the last week in August through most of September—so start planning now. We recommend kicking off the trip on a Wednesday so that you hit all three parks on less-crowded weekdays.
