Cassis: Villa Madie
Every May, Conde Nast Traveler releases its Hot List, a collection of the best new hotels, spas, restaurants, and nightspots. Check the Daily Traveler every day for a new post from this year's list.
On a hill in the pretty port of Cassis, Villa Madie has stunning Mediterranean views and a sterling pedigree: It's the progeny of chef Jean-Marc Banzo, of Aix's three-Michelin-star Le Clos de la Violette, and award-winning sommelier Enrico Bernardo. The Deco-style restaurant, with several dining rooms and a terrace, has quickly caught the attention of locals from nearby Marseille, as well as epicures from more far-flung locales. Banzo offers sophisticated riffs on regional staples: an artichoke and onion mille-feuille or a succulent Provençale lamb dish comprising a tiny chop and saddle served with roasted garlic and a goat cheese-laced potato gratin. The southern French wines are outstanding (entrées, $52-$60).
