St. John Bread and Wine alumnus Tom Pemberton has made minimalism the order of the day at his first restaurant, on a residential street in West London. Pared-down decor (white walls, maroon leather booths) ensures that nothing detracts from the well-sourced, simply prepared food on the daily-changing, thoroughly British menu. While some dishes (beetroot, lettuce, and boiled egg salad; calf's liver, sage, and onions) benefit from understatement, others could do with embellishment, including the too subtle pheasant. Charming service and a stunning selection of cheeses--the St. James is particularly recommended--should guarantee the future of this homey spot (entrées, $26-$29).
