The fluttering prayer flags, the monk's determined expression, the imposing monastery looming in the distance: This photo has a lot to capture the eye. Wanwisa Posner's image helped her win our 2008 Dream Trip Contest, but her description of the story behind the picture captured our imagination. Here's what she wrote in her contest entry:
"Past this last viewing point on the way to Tiger's Nest, a monastery perched on a 900-foot cliff in Bhutan, the path narrows and there's a sheer drop on one side, with lots of tourists traversing to and fro. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and were probably the youngest hikers by 30 years. We are both afraid of heights and felt ridiculous standing there, pale with fear, as senior citizens streamed by us on their return from the monastery. One older gentleman told us that we would regret not completing the hike. He said he had a fear of heights, too--and only one functioning eye, so his depth perception was not great. After hearing this, we mustered up the courage to finish our pilgrimage."
Share your travel photos and memories in our 2009 Dream Trip Contest, launching tomorrow. You could be just a few clicks away from a $25,000 trip to anywhere you choose.
