Dream Trip entrant baiwenli shot today's featured Dream Trip entry, Gal Pals, on a trip to India. The image is a mix of movement and color that was captured in a faraway land but which represents a familiar scene to the photographer.

"Inside the gates of the Taj Mahal I was overwhelmed by what I saw," baiwenli writes. "It was hard to absorb it all. But then this group of gal pals walked by. It was the Indian version of me out for the day with my girlfriends. This picture now hangs in my kitchen, and every time I look at it I remember that deep down everybody is pretty much the same."

What is it about black-and-white travel photographs? Is it the way the absence of color draws the eye to lines and forms? Is it the timelessness of an image that could have been taken yesterday or decades ago? Or is it that black-and-white is the palette of our dreams; cities and landscapes rendered without color are places we can never really inhabit.

Dream Trip entrant devorarogers used the technique to turn an otherwise humdrum street scene in Valencia, Spain, into an enigmatic depiction of the promise of travel. Who are those figures in the distance? What lies around the corner? Where are we going? And who can we become?

"I love the light in this photo, the texture of the buildings, and the wrought-iron balconies," writes devorarogers in her Dream Trip entry, Street Scene in Valencia. "I love that people are walking in the street in a way that Americans do not.

"I love who we are when we are in Spain. We stay up late, we eat and drink what we want, we dance on rooftops. We return home each time and say, how can we do it at home? We vow to make tortilla española more often and practice eating dinner after midnight; but the light and the streets of Los Angeles never look like this."

Safari photographers often try to get the ultimate shot: the perfectly framed beast in its wild environment on the veld--with no evidence of human surroundings. By this measure, Dream Trip entrant erinnoelle's Dream Trip entry entitled Investigative Elephant falls short: One of erinnoelle's fellow occupants of the safari jeep takes up a third of the frame. But in this case, the human figure gives the image a sense of scale, movement, and immediacy.

"We were traveling through Tanzania's Tarangire National Park, and slowed when we saw a baby elephant dawdling along behind a small herd," writes erinnoelle. "Mama wasn't too far off: She walked toward us, ears flapped wide in part to show us her size. Human or elephant, we're all fiercely protective of our kids."

One such image: "Sardinia through Classic Yachts POV," captured by Dream Trip entrant GalinaSavina on a business trip that involved a classic-yacht regatta. (How do we get that gig?)

GalinaSavina finds the pic as escapist as we do. "I have this image as my computer and iPhone wallpaper," GalinaSavina writes. "Every time I look at the picture, it gives me some positive energy, some life thirst, helping me carry on and go further."

Monday starts the last week of class for New York City public school students--and for the last month Condé Nast Traveler editors and other New Yorkers have been making their commutes in a subway system full of chattering, singing, and yelling kids on field trips. (Trust us: You don't want to get on a subway car with one of these groups if you've left your iPod at home.)

Somehow, a line of school-age children looks more appealing (and infinitely quieter) from Dream Trip entrant EHoofprint's vantage point on an upper floor of a courtyard in Córdoba, Spain.

"I woke up in my hotel and headed out for the day without an agenda," EHoofprint writes in the Dream Trip entry Children's Day in Córdoba, Spain. "I came across this courtyard filled with children. They danced, sang, and played all sorts of games. I watched the festivities for a while. The thing that sticks with me the most is that laughter is truly universal. You don't have to speak the language to know that."

Travel takes us to ancient monuments and dramatic landscapes, but it can also expose us to startlingly intimate, human moments half a world away.

Dream Trip entrant amysouza, a Chicago public high school teacher, experienced one such encounter on a trip to Mali that she took with a dozen student under the aegis of Buildon.org,  an after-school service organization.

"We worked sun up to sun down every day alongside the villagers, building a cherished elementary school for the village children," amysouza writes in the Dream Trip entry "Mother of Mali". "One day a women tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to take a picture of her. Of course, I obliged! She was beautiful, as she proudly stood before me with her breastfeeding baby."

"I love the determined expression on her face, which also reflects the fierce pride and love she displayed towards her child."

Summer's almost here on the Northern Hemisphere, which means it's dead winter in Antarctica (definitely the low season for visiting the Frozen Continent). And while it's incongruous to look at a picture of penguins diving off ice into chilly waters and think about seasonal high temperatures, the warm months are when it's best to visit the bottom of the planet--and when travelers such as Dream Trip entrant sadowjmsj make the journey.

"It was our second day at the Antarctic Peninsula and our first landing on the continental mainland," writes sadowjmsj in the Dream Trip entry "Last one in is a rotten egg!"

"The main attraction was a breeding colony of Adelie penguins, numbering upwards of 100,000 breeding pairs with chicks," sadowjmsj continues. "It was a gloriously sunny day and the colors of sea, ice, and sky were unlike any I had seen before. A leopard seal had been sighted patrolling just offshore and the penguins knew it. They were hungry, but wary, and made many feints at entering the water, creating a mad dash by crowds of their neighbors, only to stop at the last minute, leading to chaos at the water line. like schoolchildren daring each other on the playground."

The phrase Roman holiday may be one of the most overused expressions when writing about a trip to the Italian capital, but this shot by Dream Trip entrant admorph makes it easy to understand the perennial appeal of the Eternal City--even on a business trip.

"The way the sheep all seem to be looking at the camera really adds a humorous element to the photo," writes blandandy in NZ Sheep. When we travel, we often notice the familiar in the foreign: a laugh between friends, a mother tending to her child, young lovers walking hand in hand.

But travel can also make the familiar seem foreign, as in this image, entitled "Reflection," by Dream Trip entrant dorothythompson, taken at Ghavam House, a nineteenth-century governor's residence turned museum in Shiraz, Iran. Here, the hijab all women in the country are required to wear transforms a Westerner's self-portrait into a snapshot of a distant land and culture.

"This mirror hall, the docent said, is recycling as art, when a creative use was found for broken pieces of mirrors being imported from Venice," writes dorothythompson. "How to capture the awe and remember the feeling of being within this regal place? A self-portrait in mirrors."

Photo of the Day has posted before about the allures of the prototypical Paris café: There's something undeniably decadent (and satisfyingly simple) about sitting at a sidewalk table with a drink, watching (or sketching) as the world goes by. Today's highlighted Dream Trip entry, Parisian café life, by Dream Trip entrant SarahCanez, is another photographic testament to the appeal of sophisticated loafing around.

"As I was sitting at a sidewalk café in Paris, near Notre Dame, I was enjoying watching all the people walk by, viewing the wonderful variety of clothing, hairstyles, shoes, bags, bicycles, and motorbikes," writes SarahCanez. "I noticed the man sitting next to me was also enjoying the view, but instead of taking photos, he was drawing some of the sights that were in front of us. I took this photo surreptitiously, so that he didn't know I was photographing him.

"I love the play of the pencil, the drawing, his hand, the glass of wine, and the bottle of water behind the wine. This is my favorite photo of our visit to Paris."

What's going on in this picture? Is it a street performance? A circus act? A political protest?

Dream Trip entrant svezina captured this fiery image during a New Year's Eve celebration on the Caribbean island of Bequia, and describes the serendipity of arriving on the scene in the entry entitled "Light My Fire."

"In 2004, my husband and I went to Bequia, a small island in the Grenadines, to celebrate New Year's Eve," writes svezina. "We arrived on the island just before midnight and barely had enough time to drop our stuff off at our guest house before making our way to the beach. When we arrived, we were amazed by how many people had gathered to ring in the New Year. At the stroke of midnight a girl near us lit a flare and held it over her head. It was a spectacular scene. The red glow was all you could see, and you could feel the heat from the fire. I was glad I remembered to bring my camera that night."

It's Friday and the weekend's almost here. There are still tasks to do and projects to complete before calling it a day--or a week.

Dream Trip entrant janadidi captures the universal experience of wrapping up work just before quitting time in the entry Potter's Wheel, showing an artisan practicing his craft in the capital of Nepal--and describing the sense of hope that came from purchasing an item from another craftsman.

"The sun was starting to set in Patan, the old square just outside Kathmandu," writes janadidi. "This potter was still busy at his wheel. The shopkeepers were sweeping up, getting ready to close their stalls for the day. I bought a multi-strand beaded necklace nearby, one like the ladies wore when they got married. I had no prospects for myself but liked the idea of trying the necklace out on my next trek, just to see what it was like."

"To see the Pyramids before the packed tour coaches arrived, we got up before sunrise and rode out into the desert on a couple of rented camels," writes darko."Seeing them bathed in the light of the desert dawn helps us travel back in time and stand in awe of the human conviction which drove our ancient ancestors to build these immense headstones."

A recent survey found that most Americans are planning to keep their travel within the United States this summer. But giving up foreign travel doesn't have to mean sacrificing a sense of wonder and discovery.

Just ask Dream Trip entrant  CMS40, whose entry, "Natural Beauty," reveals an image waterfall hidden in the heartland, and describes the ordeal of reaching it.

"After missing the sign for this spot in a small Northern Wisconsin town," CMS40 writes, "I finally located the small park. We took in the outhouses and few scattered picnic tables, and wondered if this was going to be a wild-goose-chase. Hoisting on my backpack, we hiked along the river as fallen leaves twirled in the wind. Walking, walking, walking. Finally, right before me, there it was! Summer months bring crowds of tourists to the great cities of Europe. We usher in the beginning of June with Dream Trip entrant erincounihan's image of the season, showing a fair-weather thong that's descended on Prague's medieval Old Town Square.

"This part of the city was amazing," writes erincounihan in her Dream Trip entry. "Mobs of people stopped to read their guides books and savor the details about Kafka's childhood home (visible on the right), the Astronomical Clock, damage from WWII, and the statues and churches that surround the square.

"This picture captures the moment of awe that I felt while standing here," erincounihan concludes, "though, as you can see, not everyone stopped to savor the moment."

The Berlin Wall fell 20 years ago, but it began with an uprising in the city of Leipzig. In his June article, "Keeper of the Flame," G. Y. Dryansky visits the eastern German city and finds an independent-minded cultural powerhouse that surprises with its vanguard art scene while still maintaining a sense of history.

Leipzig is still an emerging destination to many American travelers, but quite a few Dream Trip entrants have experienced another celebrated city of the former East Germany that's just an hour's drive away: Dresden, known for its Baroque buildings that have been well restored since World War II, and some of the best Renaissance art in Europe.

The stately architecture and general pomp of the city made an impression on Dream Trip entrant lcollura, whose Dream Trip entry "Standing Guard" captures a knightly-looking street performer posing in front of Dresden's Procession of Princes, a ceramic-tile mural depicting successive generations of Saxon rulers.

"I recall the biting cold I felt during the morning I captured this moment in time," lcollura writes. "I remember this man standing perfectly still in front of his regal backdrop despite the frosty air and almost total seclusion. His solemn stance warmed me that winter day."

The country of France is dripping with enviable landscapes made memorable by their connection to water-meandering rivers, turquoise seas, tinkling fountains. In "The Story of Eau," author Cristina Nehring writes of the land-liquid-love connection, accompanied by stirring panoramic shots by the celebrated photographer Harf Zimmermann.

Dream Trip entrant isachsen knows the joys to be had in Paris where earth meets water, as the entry "A Girl and Sailboat in Jardin du Luxembourg" demonstrates.

"To walk through Paris's Jardin du Luxembourg is always a pleasure, be it winter or summer," reads the entry that accompanies this photo of a petite Parisienne wrangling a toy boat on the pond in front of the French Senate building. Condé Nast Traveler's June 2009 issue is on newsstands now! To coincide with the publication, for today's Photo of the Day, we picked an appropriate Dream Trip 2009 entry, with an image of what might be our very youngest regular reader with the May 2009 issue of her mag of choice, on location at Casa del Soul in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. We pass along her words of travel wisdom:

"Nicaragua has warm weather and it's very relaxing," writes eight-year-old Maria Philip in the Dream Trip entry "Your Number One Fan" of her stay in Central America, one of five trips she says she'll take this year. "Believe it or not, it's more relaxing than Hawaii. I've been to Hawaii once or twice, and people there are running around town even if they are on vacation. In Nicaragua, all people really do here is hang out by the pool and read."

"Also, there are cute dogs and great massages," she adds. "And if you swim to a beach and dig, you can feel boiling-hot water."

Happy reading to Maria and all our loyal readers. Check Photo of the Day all this week for highlights from our pool of Dream Trip entries that relate to Condé Nast Traveler's June 2009 issue.

This shot of black-and-white bovines on a grassy slope puts one in mind of bucolic scenes throughout America's heartland--which is exactly where Dream Trip entrant plruegg captured this moment.

"I spotted these happy cows as I drove along a country road in central Wisconsin, and made a quick U-turn to snap this shot," plruegg writes in the Dream Trip entry "Wisconsin Happy Cows." Ah, the lure of the open road! Or, in this case, the romance of the rails.

Talkingbean's Dream Trip entry "Peruvian Training" depicts the intoxicating serendipity of travel:

"I did this Peruvian journey solo, having originally planned a trek trip with my sister, who was forced to cancel at the last minute," writes talkingbean, who discovered that one of the joys of traveling alone is comparing notes with other single travelers met along the way. "Life is a long road with endless horizons and opportunities posing the question, 'What--and who--is just beyond that bend?' "
