Christmas in New York City

Rockettes impersonating toy soldiers at Radio City Music Hall, Dec. 23, 2006
By Wendy Perrin
Never in a million years did I think I'd end up at Radio City Music Hall for the Christmas Spectacular. Then I had kids.
Tim and I took them to see it yesterday and, to my amazement, I can assure you that the show truly is spectacular.
Three-year-old Doug's favorite moment was when the dancing toy soldiers fell down like dominoes. He's got good taste. "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" is a choreographic wonder that has been the show's signature number since 1933.
Four-year-old Charlie's favorite scene: A whimsical rendition of
"The Nutcracker" ballet danced by fuzzy oversized bears. "Those aren't
really bears," announced Charlie mid-scene, proud that he couldn't be
duped. "Those are people in bear costumes, right?"
Tim: "Yes, that's right. Hey, look, here come some Care Bears."
Charlie: "No, Daddy, those aren't Care Bears! Everybody knows Care Bears have rainbows on them. Besides, Care Bears are real."
The great news for people with preschoolers is that there are 9:00 a.m. shows. At yesterday's there were plenty of empty seats for wiggle room.

Doug (in front) was mesmerized. Charlie (in back) was more skeptical.
