Family Ski Trip In February
By Wendy Perrin
Sorry I've been gone awhile. My husband threatened that if he caught me blogging over the holidays he'd stuff me up the chimney with no earplugs. (Yes, the chimney next to the new drum set on which Doug's been banging out "Jingle Bells" nonstop since Christmas.)
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the family with 4 kids who had to cancel their ski trip to Smugglers' Notch, VT--where there's little snow--and find an alternate resort with plenty of powder and last-minute availability. They ended up in Breckenridge, CO. Reader Kate224 wrote in:
"We're also thinking about a family ski trip this winter and are concerned about the lack of snow on the East Coast (we live in Boston). I have three small children and have been reading reviews of family-friendly ski resorts at WeJustGotBack.com. Based on its review of Copper Mountain in CO., I'm thinking of booking for early Feb. I would love to book Smugglers' Notch again (we went last year and loved it), but I would feel better if we got some snow first."
Given all the fresh powder in the Denver area, I think Copper is the better bet. An added bonus: It's an easy car ride from Copper to other kid-friendly resorts such as Breckenridge, Keystone, Beaver Creek, and Vail. If you've got the energy and feel up to piling the kids into the car on a few days of your trip, you could try out those other slopes too (and get a sense of where you might want to go next time). I've skied all of those mountains and hope to take my kids there someday soon--especially Breckenridge (while they're small) and Vail (when they're older).
If you want someone knowledgeable and well-connected to make the arrangements for you and bring up details and factors you may not have thought about, Jana Emery of Ski.com is terrific (my friend with 4 kids was thrilled with her). Jana is the ski specialist on my annual list of the best travel planners. Travelergwen, a fellow reader of this blog, has used Resa Carp of Ski.com several times and highly recommends her as well. Happy skiing!

Copper is definitely the best place to go with kids--I remember learning to ski there in 1982! Copper is great because it has easier trails for kids, is family friendly, has great instructors, and is reasonably priced.
