Why I'm in Jamaica

Tim and the kids at a Jamaican resort that will go unnamed, Jan. 12, 2007.

I got a kick out of reading a post about my blog at Jaunted.com, which calls itself "The Pop Culture Travel Guide." It's a cool site by people who, unlike me, know how to blog. I wish I had time to educate myself about the blogosphere, but it would take more than the 8 seconds of spare time I have daily, what with my insanely busy day job offline as an editor at Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, my travel schedule, and mothering two kids (who at this moment are climbing all over me as I lie in bed trying to write this at 5:15 a.m.).
Apparently there are all manner of tactics for making your blog stand out in the blogosphere. I know none of them. So I assumed nobody except my family, a few friends, and some Conde Nast Traveler subscribers were actually reading this. Now I find out that someone at another blog is actually paying attention.
(It's 5:30 now and we're having a Cheerios picnic in bed and discussing Charlie's dream about Dora the Explorer.)
So the reason I got a kick out of the Jaunted.com post is this: They assume I'm in Jamaica "doing the kind of inter-generational trip that is simultaneously so hot right now and nauseating to people like us. (We take trips to avoid our families.)"
Actually, that's not the reason I'm here. I'm in Jamaica to report a story I can't tell you anything about (actually, two different stories; if I didn't squeeze at least two articles out of every business trip, I'd be away from the kids WAY too often). Whenever I travel, I blog only about things I won't be covering in print, since I mustn't give away information that's going into the magazine. The kids are here because this was one of the few trips I could bring them on relatively easily, and their grandmother is here because someone has to watch them while my photojournalist husband Tim and I are off working.
(Now Charlie's teaching Doug how to pee into the potty.)
Uh-oh. Gotta run.

Over at Jaunted, we've always heard that Jamaica is a great spot for families with a combo of affordability, amenity-filled resorts and easy access from the US through MoBay airport. Having your kids and their grandmother there sure makes it sound like an intergenerational trip, even if that's not the focus of your research. We'll be looking forward to finding out what your stories are about (and burning with envy since we're stuck in wet, foggy, gross New York City right now)!
