How To Get Free WiFi at the Airport

The Starbucks next to my gate in JFK's sparkling and efficient new Terminal 9.
By Wendy Perrin
A few minutes ago I was sitting in this Starbucks in American Airlines' Terminal 9 at JFK (another planet from AA's Terminal 8). I wanted WiFi and would have had to pay JFK's wireless provider $7.95 for a one-day pass. Instead, I got up and moved to the gate directly outside the AA Admirals Club lounge. I don't belong to the club anymore (I gave up my membership when I joined Delta's Crown Room Club), but here I get its wireless signals! So now I'm at Gate 42, sipping my cinnamon dolce latte and blogging away for free. Next time you hear from me, I'll be coming at you from L.A.

Terminal 9 is quite something, especially given the chaos that it used to be. My big complaint is that the distance from check in to the gates is now massive. You walk and walk and walk.....of course, all the third world flights still go into the ghetto that is terminal 8...I guess AA feels that people coming from third world airports won't mind as much if they land in chaos.
The fees for internet access at airports would be shocking if you didn't already expect to pay $2 for a bottled water or $10 for a sandwich there....but there actually is a battle going on to provide free wifi in some airports.
But the authorities that control most airports look to make fees in any way possible and have fought against this. The airlines themselves want to liberate the lock on wireless that most airports have. In many airports, airlines are blocked from installing their own wifi systems and instead have to rely on the poor service and high fees imposed by the airport administrators. This isn't a fight for passengers' rights; it is about the airlines wanting to have their own wireless system of communication within the airport.
Looking forward to your posts from Los Angeles. The best new restaurant here is Mozza, which Mario Batali opened with Nancy Silverton. It is a pizza place similar to Otto in NY, but with better bread and a more intimate atmosphere. Great for a late lunch (it opened in December and is PACKED at nigh).

OH and American used to be my LA-JFK flyer of choice bc the upgrades were more frequent...but now I am addicted to the United PS service. Even in coach PS is a good ride.
