WHERE'S WENDY? Round 5

by Wendy Perrin

An ancient Roman city by the sea, a crumbling monument and a view from the top are the only clues to Wendy Perrin's whereabouts.
Today I explored this ancient Roman city by the sea.

There I am, resting along the main Roman road.

About 3 kilometers away sits another ancient site.

If you stand with your back to that monument, this is the panorama you see.

Where am I?  Please name both sites.

OMG, I so know this.

The first is the site of Tipasa, a roman ruin in Algeria, not far from the city of Algiers.

The second is the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony's Daughter, Cleopatra Selene II.

The second one is also known as the Tombeau de la Chrtienne. It's near Kolea.

There are also ruins at Cherchell, I don't suppose you went there as well?

Ooh... actually I think that tomb is at Cherchell, isn't it?

I'm guessing the first one to be the Ruinas Griegas de Empuries. Still working on the second one...

Cherchell was originally an Egyptian settlement, that was then settled by the Phoenecians, who named it Iol, who was later settled (taken over) by the Romans who named it Caesarea.

The tomb wasn't just for Cleopatra Selene II but also for her husband, King Juba II.

Impressive, Tracker. Wow! I was wayyyyyy off.

travelergwen, I did worse. In the last contest, where Wendy was in the Caribbean, I thought she was in Benin, Africa to begin with!

BTW, it seems that some refer to that Tomb of the Christian (AKA Mausoleum of Mauritania), as being part of Tipasa (I suppose because it's less than two miles away), others say it's near Cherchell.

Once more, how many names can a thing have? LOL :D

I think that last picture is the plain of Mitidja. The "Tombeau de la Chretienne" sits at the top of a hill overlooking it.

Well, I just wandered into the room and have absolutely nothing to add....but thanks for a great history lesson! :)

VVN Tracker. This is my 1st chance today to look at the new clues, but I would not have had any idea! I figured she was heading in that direction for continent #2. Watch out though, I have tomorrow off, so will be refreshing constantly. : 0)

Hey Tracker1312, you sure seem to know your classics / history. Like Seafarer said, thanks for the interesting history lesson...

Me, I was caught sleeping again.

I've always been interested in Archaeology and History. That alone, all the ruins and the history, I think that's why I always wanted to travel everywhere. I would love to go there, and about a thousand other places that I've read about too! One day...

KiwiWriter, you're going to have to start waking up earlier!

LoriB, let the Refresh-Button war begin! :D
