WHERE'S WENDY? Round 9 Wrap-Up

by Wendy Perrin

If you guessed Wendy was hiding out in San Millan de Cogolla, you guessed correctly.
Tracker1312 managed to guess where I was yesterday: San Millan de la Cogolla, Spain.

The Monasterio de Yuso in San Millan is an important pilgrimage site with many claims to fame, but the one I find most interesting is this:

The Monasterio de Yuso in San Millan is an important pilgrimage site. One of the main attractions is this Latin text with a Spanish inscription - the first words ever written in that language.

See the handwriting next to the printed Latin text?  Those are the first words ever written in the Spanish language.  They were scribbled by a monk up on the hill at the Monasterio de Suso -- the one that looked familiar to LoriB:

These arches are part of the Monasterio de Suso, which started as a hermit's cave.

Suso began as a hermit's cave and by the 11th-century had grown into a romanesque pilgrimate site so popular that the monks had to build a new, bigger monastery (Yuso) in the valley below.

The Monasterio de Suso as seen from outside. By the 11th century it was so popular a pilgrimage site that the monks had to build a larger monastery close by.

Here's what Suso looks like as you approach the entrance.  Open that door and you'll be in the hallway with the arches and the killer view.

Up next, Where's Wendy? Round 10.
