Question from reader Nad39:
"I seem to have misplaced your recommendations for an apartment rental agent in Paris. Would you be kind enough to give me that information?"
What you're looking for is Wendy Perrin's Worldwide Guide to Affordable Villa Vacations, which appeared in Conde Nast Traveler's June issue. For Paris, we'd recommend Annie Flogaus of Just France. She has a separate website expressly for apartments in the City of Light. They come in a wide range of prices, and most require at least a week's rental. Happy hunting!

Bonjour! After 3 very happy rental experiences over the last 4 years, I am always glad to recommend Paris apartments through the very affable Gail Boisclair at www.perfectlyparis.com They offer charm, convenience and good value in excellent neighborhoods.

We just rented 2 weeks in June from www.chezvous.com and must say the apt. was better than we thought it would be and we are picky! we were in the 6th arr. and consider that and the 7th the lovliest part of Paris. So convenient, great restaurants, bakeries, the fantastic Sunday organic market Marche Raspail a few mins. walk away. ChezVous was very good in the booking process and had a greeter at the apt. when we arrived. All in all a great experience. will do it again!

I have recommend Paris Luxe Apartments based in New York ,www.parisluxeapt.com. They had the nicest selection. Our agent was extremely patient, answered all of our questions and best of all the apartment was gorgeous in the 6th near blvd St.Germain. In the price they included airport transfers, a stocked refrigerator, we even had a concierge recommending activities for our six year old.

I rented from Chez Vous. It was an extremely expensive apartment. It was infested with mold, the floors were warped and squishy, the matresses were ancient, they were doing a major renovation of the building and Chez Vous was totally unapologetic about the situation. They were just awful. It spoiled our time in Paris. NEVER RENT FROM CHEZ VOUS.

A cautionary tale:
We rented from a company and website, Welcome2France.com, and had a somewhat disappointing experience. While the apartment was lovely, we had tepid water for showers midday, the tub didn't work, the hair dryer if on high would shut off after under a minute. In addition, the lobby of the building was terrible in that it had plaster falling of the walls and reminded us of a squaters building.
In addition the transaction was anything but smooth, including changing rates (improperly calculated as well as a result of poor contract drafting and exchange rates), forms filled out on the website (as requested by the company) that didn't make it to the party responsible for fulfilling the request, and contact numbers (cell phones) that are blocked from the apartment phone.
The good news is that the apartment was lovely and there (i.e. no obvious scam) but the bad news is that this is our first experience in home/apartment renting that fell far short of what was promised/expected.

Please read: I started searching for a two bedroom two bath apartment in June for our Christmas vacation stay. I specifically looked for a TWO bedroom/TWO bathroom as we would be traveling with my husband's adult daughters and we knew the pain of one bathroom in Europe. Well, Paris by Heart actually sent to me two bedroom one bath apartments to review and I specifically rejected them (have those emails) as I needed TWO bathrooms. I decided on the St. Germain penthouse which featured two bathrooms. I paid ALL money up front plus an 800.00 security deposit. The day before we left, I was informed that the shower in the second bath was dysfunctional. The email to me was almost flippant! I am cutting and pasting here: I have just been advised by the owner of your rental apartment that the shower in the small shower room en suite with the twin beds bedroom is out of order with a malfunctioning plumbing problem. IIt can not be repaired now before your arrival. He has asked me to advise you so you don't have an unpleasant surprise when you arrive. While this development is to be regretted the small inconvenience should not prevent you from enjoying this wonderful place during the holiday time in Paris. Needless to say, I was beyond upset and wrote: The second bathroom was a MAJOR reason for us selecting this apartment. There were several two bedroom one bath apartments that we rejected! We have David's two daughters traveling with us. This is not a small inconvenience and for the price we paid, I would think that there would be something that Paris by Heart might do to make this right. If I do not have a second bath, I would like a refund for what you think is fair for not having the second bath. Don't you think this is fair? I can't let this ruin my trip, but it is no small matter to me and David. Please let us know what the owner thinks is fair. Of course, the best thing for us would be that the bathroom shower is functioning when we arrive, but if that is not to be, then we would certainly expect some type of refund.
Well... their response: NO refund for this "unanticipated" problem!!! I PAID for two bathrooms... considerably more than a one bath! It's beyond belief that they wouldn't, in good faith and fair dealing offer a refund and charge us for a one bathroom apartment! I noticed a company above offered a 20% discount because of unanticipated construction noise! Ha! Try three females in a one bathroom apartment (for which we paid a very handsome price) without a shower! The functional bath had a tub. See, we paid to AVOID this inconvenience and Paris by Heart decided that they'd just keep the money. Well, make no mistake, we're telling everyone we know, including our two sets of friends who are going to travel with us to Paris in September (this is our 6th trip) that we will NOT be renting through Paris by Heart. They have proven that they lack ethics. Shameful. It's too bad. If you'd like more information, I've saved every single email between me and Paris by Heart and I have a breakdown of what a one bath apartment would have cost compared to what we paid for a two bath. I'm not wrong about this. We were treated unfairly. I will never recommend Paris by Heart because they elected to act in this manner.

Traveling in Europe with a family of 6 can be trying to say the least. Fortunately the Paris Luxury Rentals agent who helped us pick the Saint Guillaume apartment in Saint Germain was very professional and honest. He knew that for a family of our size we needed something large.
We live in a 3,000 sq ft. home in
Maine so it was a great relief not to have to downsize like we usually do in Europe.
The apartment itself was big and beautiful. It was tastefully decorated with plenty of space (and bathrooms!) and a gym room for when we went overboard with the French cuisine.
All in all we were grateful to Paris Luxury Rentals for helping us have such a fun, stress-free vacation!
