Dream Trip Winner

I blow off the sunrise tour for a swim in the pool, and a stroll along some of the catwalks and towers here at my Ariau treetop hotel. At lunch, I overhear some people complaining about insects. Complaining about insects on their JUNGLE TOUR? If you have a problem with critters, maybe you should spend your holiday at Disneyland, and even there you have to deal with mice and a cricket.

Anyway, I walk a little more and then try to write, but squirrel monkeys keep trying to steal things from me, and a capuchin actually rips out the "fn" key from the laptop. I don't even know what that key does.

Leaving Ariau Amazon Towers hotel: Romero, right, says 'bye.

The boat back to Manaus leaves at 2 p.m., so just before then I say good-bye to my two guides, Romero and Amadeo. Romero gives me a hat. If any readers of this blog come to Ariau, request Romero. I can't guarantee you'll get a hat, though.

On the boat are the Aussies, who are flying to Rio tonight, and Pamela, who was the photo and film liaison for Ariau but just resigned in order to travel. I hang out with these guys on the ride back, and marvel at the fact that this is the first time I have ever gone into the jungle and looked better coming out of it.

I check back in to Amazon Backpackers and have some fish and fried plaintains before heading out to meet Pamela and the Aussies at a cafe in front of Teatro Amazonas, an attractive 19th-century theater in Manaus that is now surrounded by giant grotesque clowns in honor of the upcoming Carnaval. I hang out there briefly, and then crash at the hostel.

Back to Manaus: I'm having a Werner Herzog moment.
