Before You Rent a Car With GPS . . .
I put 1,300 miles on this car in Spain in February.

My last post shared a taxi tip gleaned from the front desk at the Madrid hotel where I stayed a few weeks ago. I've been meaning to share another tip I picked up during that trip -- at the Avis car-rental counter: If you own a portable GPS for your car back home, consider carrying it with you instead of renting one.
Say you're planning to rent a car in Europe this summer: Consider downloading a map of Europe into your portable GPS. At the Avis office in Madrid, the cost of renting a GPS was $18 per day. Rent for nine days and the cost is $162. By contrast, the cost of downloading data for ALL of Europe into my Garmin GPS was about $160 -- and I can use the Europe maps during future trips.
Okay, so that was smart enough, but wait till you hear the dumb thing I did next: I rented snow chains from Avis for $98, only to discover -- at a roadside supermarket later that day -- that I could have bought them for $31.
The moral of the story: Before opting for car-rental extras, compare the cost of borrowing them from the rental company with the cost of buying them from another source.

Wendy, you are so right! Last summer, we rented a convertible for two weeks in Provence and requested a GPS. However, were told well ahead of our departure that a GPS could not be guaranteed as not many were available. No problem: we brought along our own, a Tom Tom, fully loaded with Europe straight from the manufacturer. The road trip was a breeze! Just now, I am in the south of France again, one leg of a countrywide sweep in search of fabulous and not all that pricey getaway stays. Once again, I packed my faithful Tom Tom and was surprised to find that my teeny little rental was already equipped with a GPS! Still, good thing I have Tom Tom, as I cannot figure out the intricacies of my rental's GPS. Neither could the rental agent! Nor a few young techies at my first hotel in Paris. Bringing Tom Tom along meant another thing to keep track of in packing, but I am glad to make the effort. (A big "must" is to remember to disconnect and hide or take it with you when exiting the car as portable GPS systems are high on the theft list.) Nonetheless, GPS is the way to go when renting a car, no matter where your "road trip" takes you!

I LOVE my Garmin Nuvi. I took it along on a Unique Inns B&B Northern CA wine country tour and plan to take it with me when I visit Unique Inns of Southern Oregon in May.
A great roadtrip partner; it doesn't take up much space, require food, water or sleep! It's not a great dining companion, however. Nancy
