Shooting Polar Bears in Canada
by Wendy Perrin
No, not with a gun. With a camera. "I am interested in planning a trip to Churchill, Canada, to photograph the polar bears," writes Carynms. "Photography is the main purpose of the trip. Can you recommend a travel specialist or tour operator?"
If it were polar bears in Alaska, I'd know who to recommend (a guy with whom I spent a week on Arctic Circle ice for an article three years ago). As for Manitoba . . . if I wanted to see polar bears (which, actually, sounds like a great idea, once my sons get a little older), here's what I'd do. First I'd contact Polar Bears International and ask who they recommend for photo tours. Then I'd contact Natural Habitat Adventures, endorsed by our sister blog Daily Traveler. I'd also phone the two Canada travel planners on my latest list of the world's top travel specialists: Ask them how many travelers they've sent on polar bear photography trips, and ask which trip or company garners the most raves from their clients.
I'm hoping Perrin Post readers might also chime in with their suggestions for Carynms. Does anyone have a polar-bear-photography trip to recommend? Thanks!

Travel with a real HD film crew in an insulated, 4x4 production rig. Cinematographer guides know where and when to "shoot" polar bears, northern lights, etc. See the healthiest bears in Alaska, from an island in the Arctic Ocean. In 2003 I had guests who took a Polar Bear photo safri wtih Joseph Van Ost Photo Safaris:
P.O. Box 655
Vashon Island, Washington 98070
Phone: 206-463-5383
Email: info@photosafaris.com

The took them out on tundra buggies (think Star Wars Empire Strikes Back) and they came back with fabulous photos. I don't know what their future trips will be for Churchill, but it's always worth checking.

I has the pleasure of traveling to Churchill earlier this month. Here are the links to my travel journals that include photos from my polar bear adventure:

I would not hesitate to recommend Churchill Nature Tours in a heartbeat to anyone considering making the trek to Churchill to view and photograph the polar bears.
