The Top Five Things We Loved About St. Michaels, Maryland

Mdcombo1

by Wendy Perrin

If you were following my vacation escapades on Twitter last week, then you know I was on the Chesapeake Bay, based in the quaint vintage port of St. Michaels ("The Town That Fooled The British"), sailing, sightseeing, scarfing down steamed blue crabs by day, roasting marshmallows for s'mores by night, and generally trying to unwind despite two trips to the E.R. with my hyperkinetic 6- and 4-year-old boys.  Here's a quick-and-dirty photo essay on the five things we loved most:

Museum3
1. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, one of those hidden-gem finds that manages to be both kid-friendly and adult-interesting at the same time. Love that screwpile lighthouse from 1879!

Boatshop
The Museum has 10 exhibit buildings on 18 gorgeous waterfront acres, including a Working Boat Yard where people can take boat-building classes. "I could have spent a couple of hours in the Boat Yard alone," says my husband Tim. "And I mean that both ways." :)

The museum's director of education, Robert Forloney (pictured above)--a friend of a friend--gave us a guided tour and had the kids rapt from start to finish. Lucky us!

Don't you love all those old signs from ship prows of a bygone era?

Ferry4
2. The 325-year-old ferry route between Bellevue and Oxford. I'm a car ferry junkie.

As are the kids. :)

3. Our Chesapeake Pirates Adventure in Annapolis, about an hour's drive north of St. Michaels.

Pirates

The boys used water cannons to fend off an "attack" by rival pirates.

Icecream

4. Moose Tracks ice cream at Justine's Ice Cream Parlor, a St. Michaels hub.

Purplehouse

5. Rush hour on Tilghman Island, an authentic working watermen's village 15 miles to the south.

Goodbye, St. Michaels. It was lovely while it lasted!

Car ferries rule, don't they?

I especially like exiting the ones that originate in the U.K. and seeing all the signs that say "DRIVE ON THE RIGHT".

That hammer picture is priceless, and you are a brave woman. I'm afraid to even let my kids play croquet.

I loved the pictures the Ferry ride looks like fun for the kids, they even got to shoot water canons how cool.

Oh by the way where did you stay during your trip? You should check out The Hampton Inn where I work its a great hotel and there is an awesome money saving promotion too. Gotta have some play to stay when your travel right? Hey come check it out.

Hampton Inn is offering 10% off their best rate available rate until 9/1/08. Were also giving away some great prizes leading up to TEAM USA competing in the Olympic Games.

Oh check out this funny video called Ballad of a Traveler, it absolute hilarious and really sums of the experience of a unhappy traveler.

What a lovely vacation. Thanks for sharing!

That video is a riot! I'm still laughing.

We actually didn't stay in a hotel. We were in a gorgeous house my mom rented, right on the water.

Check out, www.tilghmanislandmanor.com. Historic house in the village of Tilghman Island.
