Question About Electronic Passports
by Wendy Perrin
This one came in from ronlrose:
"I have just received my new U.S. Electronic Passport. In the past I have carried my PP in a leather PP wallet. Can the chip be read through the leather or will I have to extract the PP at each checkpoint? Thanks."
When I skim through the State Department's Electronic Passport FAQs, the answer doesn't pop out at me. Anybody happen to know?

They can be read through the passport holder. However, as with non-chip passports, some immigration officers may request you remove the passport from the holder.

Well, there you go. If TheGlobalTraveller says it, you know it's true. What would we do without him!?

Skimming. The Department is using an embedded metallic element in our passports. One of the simplest measures for preventing unauthorized reading of e-passports is to add RF blocking material to the cover of an e-passport. Before such a passport can be read, it has to be physically opened. It is a simple and effective method for reducing the opportunity for unauthorized reading of the passport at times when the holder does not expect it.
