Seeking an Affordable Place to Stay in NYC

"We're going to NYC 12/15 thru 12/21," writes John B. Brams. "Any tips on where to stay less expensively than the usual hotels? Thanks much."

Wow. That's one of the most expensive weeks of the year for Manhattan hotel stays. I've heard reasonable feedback from travelers who've opted for short-term apartment rentals -- through, say, Metro-Home or VRBO -- but of course those can be a crap shoot. If I were Manhattan-bound and weren't fussy about my choice of hotel, I'd take my chances with Priceline or Hotwire (see my Perrin Report column on Priceline bidding tricks.)  Don't like bidding sites? Then check out the discounted rates on offer at Quikbook.com and Hotels.com. And don't forget the NYC Starwood promotion we featured last week on our Deal of the Day blog.

Can anyone else suggest a tried-and-true affordable alternative to New York City's "usual hotels"? We'd love to hear it.

You might try The Edison, right in the heart of Times Square, just across the street from the Marquis, and just two doors down from the W.
Beds are so so, but the jr suites give you an additional room to spread out in. Often used by tour groups. The breakfast/lunch area, on the main floor, is always interesting people watching.

The W Hoboken is a great hotel without the NYC prices. It's over the Hudson in NJ, but the PATH train is only a 4-5 block walk to the hotel. Rooms are bigger than NYC hotels and it's a W!

My family went to NYC Dec 20-24 two years ago. We stayed at the Radio City Apartments on 49th at 6th. We had a small apartment with separate bedroom w/2 beds, a kitchenette, living area and bathroom. I think it was $225/night. We were in the heart of all the Christmas action and shopping, and also close the the theaters.
