Where's John? Wrap Up: The Winner Is...

St_christopher_place
St. Christopher's Place,  just off Oxford Street, is one of my favorite places to stroll in London.

by John Oseid

The jig is up. Congratulations to LoriB, who guessed that I snapped those Final Round pics in the Camden Town area of London. I ate and shopped in the jam-packed, cacophonous Camden Lock Market, the former canal warehouses that are a stark contrast to the peace and quiet of St. Christopher's Place (pictured above).  For her doggedness in tracking down my locations throughout the Where's John? contest, LoriB wins the overall crown as well.

Where's John? Final Round, Take 2

Locksperrinpost_2
T
he canal locks as seen from a footbridge. Where am I?

by John Oseid

You guys are close, but no cigar . . . yet. Here's one more clue as to my whereabouts:

A number of massive old warehouses have been converted into swank condos in a basin behind me, just beyond the bridge on which I stood when I shot the early nineteenth-century canal locks you see above.

The swank housing is quite a contrast to the alternative scene that has livened up the old lock yards for the last 25 years or so. It's a charivari of funkiness here: Hundreds of shops and stalls sell everything from punk and goth accessories to cyberwear. You can even kick back in a hookah bar.

Myself, I had a beer in a famous old bar on the main street. The bar's underground music venue has hosted many top rock groups.

Where am I?  Name the city.

Where's John? Final Round

Canalperrinpost
You can stroll for hours along this canal's towpath. Where am I?

by John Oseid

I've moved on from Austria and am at my final stop before heading home. The canal above slices through the northern tip of a large city park near the center of town.  The canal is as tranquil a place as can be, even though just a few blocks away it's a boisterous scene. My cousin who lives here took me shopping for hours in antiques stores and boutiques, and we picked our way through food stalls in the markets.

Where's John? Round 5

by John Oseid

You guys are too smart. I am now in another town, but one with a much lower profile than Rust where I was yesterday, so good luck.

An ambitious local has made a name for himself by growing organic produce and turning it into high-end preserves. Above, the selection and packing process can get furious.

Wine still rules here, however, and for the last few years it's been possible to drink some of this area's reds in fine American restaurants. The vineyard below is not in town but is a special project by the town's best-known winemaker.

Where's John? Round 4

Rust_window_perrinpost
The rustic look goes back several hundred years in this lakeside
wine village. Tell me in what town I've been peeping into the windows.

by John Oseid

You've followed me from Vienna, Austria, to Sopron, Hungary, and today you find me in a wine village where I'm clicking away again with my ... well, Wendy's . . . cell phone.  Wendy, you didn't tell me I can use this thing to check baseball scores on the Internet too!

I'm wandering the streets and squares of a famous wine village -- a "free city" known for having preserved its vernacular architecture and for the long-billed birds that roost here.

Many village rooftops sport large nests. Look closely for a few in
this town square.

Where am I?   Read on for your final clue, after the jump.

Where's John? Round 3

Sopronperrinpost
Hip to be square: After many years in the dumps, this medieval
and Baroque town square is the place to be seen again. Where am I?

by John Oseid

After enjoying a long lunch in the square you see above, I walked around this city's tiny, oval-shaped Old Town snapping more photos (see below). So far, so good with your cell phone, Wendy. Lest you think I'm only taking pictures with it, I can assure you I'm also running up quite a bill for you.  I made several calls to the States while on the train here from Vienna.

You mean it still runs? You won't find many of these old-timers
here anymore, but a few of these once-ubiquitous cars live on.

Where's John? Round 2

Where am I?

by John Oseid

On my last several visits to this city I had meant to check out this monument, but I could never find it, as it's not visible from any major streets. I do remember cars whizzing around the square years ago, but today it's as peaceful as anywhere in the city. In the square stands a statue to a German playwright.  Where am I?

Where's John? Getting Handy on the Road

by John Oseid

Clue #1: The language they speak here is the same one in which I wrote Conde Nast Traveler's August 2006 "Where Are You?" contest.

Clue #2: In this country a cell phone is called a "handy."  Which it certainly is:  I shot the above photo with it!

A few days ago, when I told Wendy where I was headed on vacation, she begged me to post a few pics for a "Where's John?" game. Then she asked for my cell phone number so we could be in close touch. I had to admit to her that I don't have a cell phone that works overseas.  After getting over her open-mouthed shock, she whipped something out of her desk and handed it to me.  "Here. This will solve all your problems. Have a ball.  And have a Federweisser for me."  Didn't know I had any problems, but thank you, Wendy, you were right. I'm having a ball.

Wendy's phone -- a Samsung SGH-A707 with AT&T service -- allows me to shoot pictures and e-mail them to myself. I snapped the photo you see above, e-mailed it, and published it here, all in about three minutes flat.

Take a look at my next photo -- after the jump -- and, if you have cell-phone picture-taking tips, PLEASE share them with me!

"Where Are You?" Writer Joins the Team

John_oseid
If you're a Conde Nast Traveler subscriber, you probably curse John Oseid each month: He's the one stumping you with our "Where Are You?" contest page.

by Wendy Perrin

If you've enjoyed our "Where's Wendy?" contests (last winter's and last summer's), I've got great news for you:  "Where Are You?" puzzlemeister John Oseid has joined the Perrin Post team.  He's also off to a mystery destination, from which he will soon be posting photos and clues to his whereabouts.  Tune in tomorrow and try to guess where in the world he is.

You may actually already know John's voice:  In his monthly podcasts he parses the latest "Where Are You?" clues and shares his stories. "When it's a destination I've been to, I like to conjure up obscure clues from my own experiences -- like the time in Jodhpur I sat and listened to all the voices floating up to the hilltop fort from the bazaar way below."

John, a Research Editor at Conde Nast Traveler, is a graduate of Columbia University's School of International Affairs and speaks German, French, and Spanish.  His real love is covering the music scene any chance he gets, whether it's Carnival in Trinidad or Guadalajara for a mariachi festival or Rio to check out top Carioca artists.  His most challenging travel experience to date?  The year he spent as "an entirely unqualified" English teacher in China. "It wasn't even China. It was cold, industrial 1986 Manchuria.  All those fancy skyscrapers in Shanghai? I don't know anything about that world."

What I like most about John is what an intrepid traveler he is. His favorite countries of late have been Ethiopia and Colombia. "I love going to places where people assume you can't go, whether for poverty or politics.  You can, and should."  Join us tomorrow for his first brainteaser.
