This morning is the annual Gondolier's race for the roes in celebration of the Feast of St Marcos. The gondoliers race through the Grand Canal and the winners are presented with roses to give to their lover or wife (or both). It appeared to us that these three gondoliers had no one to race for as they sat alone and observed the race with the rest of the tourists. Were they the real winners? There faces didn't display any sadness at not having a chance to present a rose to someone special. Oh well, love is what you make it.
