Great Travel Moment Sudan is a beautiful land of extremes. I lived through 3 months without a cloud in the sky. The 120-degree days baked the land into a dusty brown. Then the wet season exploded upon us with windstorms and torrential downpours, awakening dormant vegetation into a verdant palette. The Dinka tribe have lived a delicate balance between these extremes for generations. I saw this child pause among the thousands of food bags dropped by the World Food Program to temper the starvation from a bad harvest. Even as his thin body stands on the cracked earth amongst the unnatural bounty, a dark rain cell unleashes a potentially crop-saving downpour in the distance. There is so much hope in this picture, but with a sense of foreboding at the same time. |

Natures best and worst full of vibrant colors - strong contrasts. Children in pictures always pull at my heartstrings. I hope this story ended well for the tribe with a good harvest.

Thanks for all the great comments. In response to mk8 on 2/15, no the picture is not doctored, it is a scanned picture from Velvia 50 slide film. I shoot digital now, but if you must use film, I would highly recommend Velvia, though I think they may have stopped production this year. Very sad. Keep on voting!!!

I gave this photo 5 stars before but it disappeared. This is an excellent capture! The man surrounded by bags of food and the background looked very gloomy mixed with some bright clouds in the middle makes it a more effective photo to depict poverty and some hope. Excellent narrative. Five stars!
