Great Travel Moment My sisters and I traveled to Morocco somewhat naively. We didn't realize how difficult it would be as three women traveling alone. Free Westerners can?t understand the limited mobility that women in the Muslim world experience. As three independent minded sisters we hesitated to hire a guide. However, our most memorable day was when Ahmed, a local guide, navigated us through the mazelike souks of Fez. We came across this young man and his colorful bundle of embroidery thread. These threadmakers walk the fine fibers along the winding walls of the souks to make them taut and then twist them together. This rainbow of thread is used to embellish cloaks, dresses and sleeves. At dusk, Ahmed invited us into his ancient medina home to drink tea with his family. This remarkable experience allowed us a temporary step into an isolated world. |
