Great Travel Moment Battery Point Lighthouse (1856) is the northern most lighthouse on the California coast. I've visited over 100 lighthouses in the United States and this is the only one I know of that is on an island that you can walk out to during low tide. My memory is of walking from shore over to the island in shoes and socks one morning to inspect it up close, wander around and take some pictures. No one else was around so there were no tourists walking into any of my photographs. It wasn't until I was ready to leave that I noticed the tide was coming in ? fast. I made it to shore in my bare feet in waters that started out ankle height and rose to my knees by the time I reached mainland, even though the distance is not that far. |
