Great Travel Moment After a day at Volcanoes National Park, our family made the drive to the end of Highway 130 where we could hike over solidified lava fields to a spot where we could view the Kilauea lava flow enter the ocean alongside other visitors. The steam plume was spectacular during daylight as seen here and the view only got more spectacular after nightfall. You can't see it in this picture, but there was a small boat that got as close as 150 ft to the plume! We stayed until just after nightfall to witness the explosive redness and hiked back to our car in darkness guided only by flashlights. Park rangers noted that that day's demonstration was more active than usual. Definitely an experience of a lifetime. |
