Great Travel Moment Photo was taken in Zanzibar, Stone Town, Tanzania. There was no electricity on the entire island for several weeks. This didn't seem to disturb the kids playing, or the traditional bike delivery of metal containers of milk or tea. Arriving in Stone Town, the atmosphere was very different than that of Tanzania mainland due to its Moslem, Arabic background. Stone Town was crowded, spice and food markets alive sans electricity. Making our trek to the northern most location of Ras Nangwi we passed hundreds of students in uniforms, playing in parks by the bright turquoise sea. The girls wore traditional head covering. Both boys and girls played soccer, talked, ran, ate beautiful fruits...very familiar, yet for different times it seemed. Landscape changed to lush palm trees until we arrived where locals hand crafted large, wooden sailboats while remarkable women hand fished (or with a stick) dressed in woven, colorful long dresses. 6/08/ |
