Great Travel Moment A late afternoon in Botswana, we kept still, patiently waiting as a herd of elephant made their way through the haze of the distant bush fires. Most of the group was mulling about the savanna, pausing here and there to munch on a patch of palm. Others were stopped altogether, cooling themselves with a trunk full of stream water. I looked away to grab some binoculars, and caught this moment behind me. Not concerned with the heat, the smoke or grazing on palms with the others, these four in the photo strolled along, two elders seemed to be imparting their wisdom or, perhaps, just telling an old story to the young ones in tow, enjoying their time spent together. This image serves as a reminder to me that family bonds, following in the footsteps of our teachers, is not a trait necessarily unique to humankind. |

I love elis!! What a nice picture of this elephant family! They must have felt really protected since they aren't with the rest of the pack and they have the babies in tow. :-)
