Great Travel Moment My family and I were exploring Rome when we stopped for lunch near ancient Rome. I was surprised when I looked above 2 of my family members and saw a postcard-worthy view of the Colosseum. As we ordered our pasta, I couldn't help but look at the view of the Colosseum and think about the time span between the opening of the colosseum and the opening of the new restaurant we were eating in. I thought of all the other meals eaten from my exact vantage point over the past few thousand years. It was this moment that I truly realized why Rome is called the eternal city: millions of people had eaten their meals exactly where I had for many centuries, long before my first known ancestors were even alive. To me this picture exemplifies the continual juxtaposition in Roman life of the old and the new. |
