Great Travel Moment This was a picture of whirling dervishes performing in Cairo. My friends and I had attempted to see the performance twice before, but had gotten lost. So we were thrilled to have found the theater and very excited to see the performance. The evening featured traditional music, costumes and dance. Dervishes wear colorful costumes and spin in circles in time with music, sometimes for as long as 20 minutes. The crowd included tourists and locals, and the room was filled with the sound of music and the crowd clapping and stomping in time. The dervishes did not just spin, but did all kinds of gymnastics, such as spinning their colorful skirts over their heads or around their feet. The energy in the room was extraordinary. If you looked at the crowd you could see the excitement on everyone's face, regardless of their nationality or age. |
