Great Travel Moment

This photo was taken from a plane as we were about to land in Western Mongolia on July 27th 2009. It reveals the stunning vastness and magnificence of the country. The nomad tents (gers) appear miniscule within this vast emptiness in the foreground and huge mountains with glaciers behind. We were stunned by the awesome beauty of the scene. It was at this moment that we had the first hint of the amazing experience before us.When the plane landed a few minutes later we had the sense of having landed on another planet. It was five days later, after spending time "tasting" the culture and even living in gers with the Mongolian Nomads and learning about their language, child rearing customs and their way of life in general, that we viewed the solar eclipse of 2009. This scene was the opening page of an amazing adventure.
