Great Travel Moment On an island my husband and I visited off the Yucatan coast of Mexico, there were few people, and even fewer things to do. No banks, no spas, and at times, no electricity--just a couple of restaurants and a handful of locals running the few places to stay. We took several walks up and down the small island and one day we ran across this fence in the sand. There wasn't really anything around it, so I didn't know what it was meant to divide. The wood used was bleached, uneven and battered, providing a sharp contrast to the orderly and precise construction of fences we're used to seeing in Chicago. It made us realize that when materials are scarce, you have to make due with what you've got. We spent the rest of the trip being thankful for what the island gave us --fresh food, good conversation and quiet nights- instead of what it didn't. |
