Great Travel Moment At the start of Operation Desert Storm in January 1991, I was part of the ?advance crew? who flew a UH-1 ?Huey? helicopter out to where we were assigned to set up our camp. It was little more than a set of coordinates on a map, and when we arrived there was no ?X? to mark the spot. There was nothing at all; not a tree, nor a boulder, a plant or any sign of life. It was astounding to me that I could turn 360 degrees and for as far as the eye could see in any direction there was nothing but hard, rocky ground; not even a mountain dared peak above the horizon! It was truly like being on the surface of the moon. One of the crew commented: ?If there's a Hell, this has to be what it looks like.? |

That's what it's like driving through Kansas - you'll see a tree and think that it is only 1-2 miles away, only to discover it's more like 100 miles away because the land is so unchanging.
