Great Travel Moment Seligman is located on legendary Route 66 in Northwestern Arizona, south of the Grand Canyon. It is tiny, but this sign is big. 40 or 50 feet. It is a spectacular example of the golden age of roadside signage, you know, the can-do atomic 50's when optimism ruled and nothing seemed impossible in the superglow of post war America - not even putting a man on the moon! Signs like this used to be everywhere, scaled to be noticed by cars speeding by, shouting out Stop Here! Shy they were not. Sadly, these Jetsonian wonders are fewer and fewer, replaced by the mostly dull, artless signage of our time. There is hope though that what's left will serve as inspiration in the future for a similar graphic exuberance, for a similar optimism that will put a woman on Mars! |
