Great Travel Moment Islam is the prevailing religion on the African continent. Originating in Mecca in the 7th Century, Islam is now second only to Christianity in number of adherents. Meaning ?submission? in Arabic, Islam holds a time-honored and central role in the lives of most Moroccans. Muezzins, perched high up in lofty minarets, call out to the faithful five times a day as a reminder. The devout, with washed hands and feet, face toward Mecca (in Saudi Arabia) and begin their prayers. This ritual prayer, or Salah, is intended to focus the mind on God and is seen as a personal communication with him that expresses gratitude and worship. Although non-Muslims are prohibited from entering Moroccan mosques, I spent much time outside their entrances (pictured here) while speaking with the devout and listening to the muezzin call. Allahu Akbar!! |
