Great Travel Moment We were traveling through Tarangire and slowed when we saw a baby elephant dawdling along behind a small herd much the way my two year old daughter would now...poking at a bush here, flipping a rock there...very quickly we discovered Mama wasn't too far off when she walked towards us, ears flapped wide in part to show us her size ("don't even THINK about messing with me") but also reminding me of a crossing guard to protect her young. She stood in the road calmly, staring directly at my husband (in the photo), waved her trunk at her baby and then they moved along to join the group. Human or elephant, we're all fiercely protective of our kids - I love feeling like I completely understood where the Mama elephant was coming from - and to be that close to so majestic an animal in the wild was amazing. |
