Great Travel Moment It is impossible not to be awestruck at the sight of this massive imposing architectural wonder - the Amphitheatrum Flavium (aka "il Colosseo" to Italians and "the Colosseum" to the rest of the world) begun by Emperor Vespasian in AD 70 and after his death, completed by his son Titus in AD 80. Even in its ruined and skeletal state, it's an indelible reminder that the ancient Romans were master builders of structures, great and small. Will I ever forget the feeling that washed over me upon viewing it up close and in person? I think not! The persuasive pull of the Colosseum's might is ever present in the background that's on my laptop computer. |
