Great Travel Moment "The theatre district now extends from West Thirty-fourth Street northward along Broadway. Playhouses further south, on or near the main thoroughfare, are practically doomed...Times Square is already theatrical centre...Presumably the theatrical district will gradually extend northward to the lower end of Central Park"-wrote The New York Times on October 15, 1907. "Forty-three Playhouses and Music Halls Now Grouped About Times Square. NEW ONES BEING PLANNED. In Ten Years the Number Has increased from Seventeen -- Millions of Dollars Invested"-wrote the same newspaper on January 1, 1915.-"In the ten years following the erection of the Times Building the Times Square district has become the theatrical centre of the world. There are more theatres in this section of New York than in any other city in the world, and during a busy theatrical season more people attend the theatres every night in the Times Square district than attend all of the theatres in London and Paris combined." |
