Great Travel Moment An anniversary trip to Mexico's Isla Mujeres yielded the slow pace my husband and I had sought. Night after night, music lured us the zocalo. The first evening, spouts of water from the fountain danced along to a bizarre flute-like serenade while a mother and her toddler joined in. Another time, throngs of political supporters chanted La la bamba, Alicia! as would-be mayor Alicia Ricalde took to the stage. Our favorite experience was a late-night women's basketball game. We joined the crowds in the stands, cheered on the teams, and held our collective breaths at each free throw and near miss. One team was decked in gold and purple uniforms; the other was a rag-tag crew in mismatched gear. We cheered for the underdogs that night, and looking at this photo reminds me of the simple pleasures of that trip. |
