Great Travel Moment When planning a trip to Venice, I had no idea just how many tiny canals connected everything. When I arrived and began exploring, I quickly discovered how much the canals affected one's route through the city; navigating on foot becomes very dependent upon the bridges and the main walkways between them. I remember straying from the beaten path on several occasions. It seemed like every time I turned a corner, the concrete would end abruptly and without warning, and I would suddenly find myself half a step from falling in the water. I remember teetering on the edge of one particular alley, feeling like a cartoon character who's just run off a cliff and who doesn't actually fall until he looks down. If I hadn't nearly fallen in the water, though, I never would've witnessed this scene - a perfectly serene and uniquely Venetian moment. |
