Great Travel Moment On August 15, 2008, after selling our home in Gig Harbor, Washington, we embarked on what became the best experience of our lives. We spent four months and traveled over 11,000 miles, mostly over back roads with our pop-up tent trailer. We tried to learn something new everyday and experience the beauty and history of America. "Get your kicks on Route 66." During our stop in Springfield, Illinois, we connected with the history and lore of the "Mother Road" with over 2,000 miles of pavement, an untold number of drive-ins, motels and service stations. We drove a small portion of the road in Illinois to experience what this highway meant to American culture during the 20th century. The Phillips 66 sign at Shea's Service Station Museum in Springfield captured the essence of what travel must have been like in the early years of the road. |
