Great Travel Moment On August 15, 2008, after selling our home in Gig Harbor, Washington, we embarked on what became the best experience of our lives. We spent four months and traveled over 11,000 miles, mostly over back roads with our pop-up tent trailer. We tried to learn something new everyday and experience the beauty and history of America. The aerial lift bridge is the dominant landmark for the city of Duluth, Minnesota. The structure was completed in 1905 and is unique in that the deck lifts vertically to allow shipping traffic to pass underneath. The lift bridge elicited thoughts of iron ore being shipped to steel mills along with thoughts about the number of shipping tragedies that have occurred during Lake Superior storms. We felt that the night photograph of the bridge was a fitting remembrance of our visit to Duluth. |
