Great Travel Moment Tall ships have been part of the lore of the great lakes for over two centuries. They were used to transport goods and passengers from the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence Sea Way to the inland ports of commerce in Michigan,Ohio,Wisconsin, Minnesota,Pennsylvania,New York and many other Canadian ports. The lower thumb of Michigan provided abundant lumber products that were transported by ship to the major cities under construction. The City of Port Huron, known as the vacation gateway to the Blue Water Area provides numerous tourist related opportunities. In 2006 they sponsored a Tall Ship Festival. When I boarded this ship I was taken with this special moment that contrasted the bare rigging against the cloudy sky. Future festivals promised to provide the opportunity to sail as a day passenger on one of these ships. |
